Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, was born on February 16th, 1990. He spent his childhood in Toronto, Ontario, raised by his mother and grandmother following his parents’ separation. Of Ethiopian descent, his parents moved to Canada in the late ’80s. During his upbringing, Tesfaye’s father played a minimal role in his life, with the two meeting only once or twice.
