Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle is the youngest among nine siblings, having four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran who worked as a miner, occasionally sang at a venue called Bishops Blaize, while her mother, Bridget, was a shorthand typist. During her childhood, she faced bullying and was raised with the belief that complications during her birth had caused her a learning disability due to a lack of oxygen. It was later revealed that she had been misdiagnosed and instead has Asperger syndrome, along with an “above average” IQ. Education proved challenging for her, and while she obtained few qualifications, she did take vocal lessons from Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle utilized her savings to create a professionally cut demo, which she distributed to various record labels, talent competitions, and television shows. The demo featured her singing “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Subsequently, after her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent”, these performances were uploaded online. Additionally, her early work, including her version of “Cry Me a River,” appeared on a CD titled “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” to which she contributed in 1999.

After winning several singing competitions, Boyle’s mother encouraged her to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.” She had previously opted out of auditioning for “The X Factor,” believing that appearance was prioritized over talent.
